"Bottom of the Sea and Barrel"

Films: The Rift (1990)

Alias: None

Type: Mutant

Location: Ocean/Cave

Height/Weight: Ranges from that of a small dog to that of a submarine.

Affiliation: Neutral

Summary: Okay, this is where all of those "deep sea horror" films start to fizzle out. It was a fun ride, but now we're going to get these flicks more sparingly. Still, when they do arrive...

History: Somewhere at the bottom of a massive trench in the ocean, a submarine went missing. When the rescue team arrives, they find something much darker than a simple disappearance. For at the bottom of this rift in the Earth is a menagerie of corporate-mandated genetic abominations just waiting to get out and kill more things. They include killer fungus, parasitic sea lice, and a particularly large starfish-looking thing that spawns creatures that look disturbingly human.

Notable Kills: Fungus possession and death isn't exactly common as it used to be.

Final Fate: Both the giant starfish/brood mother/whatever and the machine that keeps pumping out beasts get blown up by some conveniently placed fuel tanks. The infected ones are also killed so that the surface doesn't suffer.

Powers/Abilities: The louse things can infect people with something malicious, while the starfish thing appears to be a hermaphrodite.

Weakness: Anything conventional.

Scariness Factor: 3.5-Admittingly, we don't get to see these creatures very often. But when we do, they cause nothing but havoc. The worst ones have to be both that weird sea slug thing that drags entire ships to their doom, those infectious louses, and the giant hungry starfish with the disturbing mouth. Definitely the weirdest venture we've had.

Trivia: -The largest starfish around is the sunflower star, which the giant monster near the end bears an uncanny resemblance to...

-Originally, this film was going to be set in space.

Just passing through! Just ignore us, tentacle beast!

Worse than foot fungus? Eh.
It's only an endless descent if Hell is involved.

Don't mess with mom, even if she lacks eyes to target you.

"Too...much...salad."
Sad fact of horror.

Would now be a good time to live and let live and NOT freak out with a gun?
